Our Story
Growing up, Savitha loved dance and music; she was used to the diversity of expression and creative thought encouraged in performing art forms. That's why she felt surprised and soon, isolated in her first experiences with tech and CS research. Suddenly, there seemed to only be one "right way" to think, act, and look. However, Savitha was determined to transform this isolation into a meaningful method of empowerment--both for herself and others.
After speaking with many of her peers, Savitha realized few women and minorities pursue tech because they are intimidated by how it is traditionally taught and the fact that it’s often portrayed as “geeky” and “nerdy.” In fact, from a young age, children are socialized to believe that males are better suited for STEM fields and females for creative fields: STEM toys are 3x more likely to be marketed to boys than girls.
That’s why she decided to found She Codes Art. She Codes Art seeks to break such societal constructs and stereotypes and demonstrate just how versatile computer science and technology can be. We use art as a medium to engage women and historically underrepresented minorities with technology and to teach fundamental CS concepts in our programs. Through this, we hope to get students who would otherwise not be interested in CS to start coding and promote diversity by remaining inclusive of different styles of thinking. We want the next generation of computer scientists to reflect the sheer brilliance that diversity of thought and expression can bring.
